A Tampa Bay Living Magazine Feature

Excitement is brewing among dog lovers and bar enthusiasts in St. Pete’s bar scene. Mutts & Martinis on Central, which opened its doors in May, offers a new experience that combines a love for dogs with a vibrant bar atmosphere.

The concept revolves around a spacious and inviting bar area. This is where patrons can unwind and savor their favorite beverages while spending quality time with their beloved companions. However, what truly sets this establishment apart is including a dedicated dog-friendly space with a pool, ensuring that furry friends can partake in the revelry. The 10-inch deep dog-only pool rotates 30-minute sessions between big dogs and small dogs and is an excellent place for furry friends to cool off during hot St. Pete days.

Strategically situated in the heart of St. Pete on Central Avenue, the dog and bar combo promises a welcoming ambiance crafted to cater to dogs and their human companions. The interior design blends modern aesthetics with dog-friendly elements, creating a trendy yet accommodating atmosphere.

Mutts & Martinis on Central owner Natalie Conner, who owns three other dog resorts in the Tampa Bay area, developed the concept from her affinity for dogs. She parlayed her years of experience running dog businesses in Pinellas County and beyond into an innovative concept.

“For me, the idea that I wanted to do was bring my experience and knowledge from the last 15 years running dog resorts and incorporate that into a bar scenario,” said Natalie Conner, owner of Mutts & Martinis on Central, in an interview with Tampa Bay Living Magazine. “Everybody wants to bring their dog everywhere. So why not take all that dog experience, have some more fun with it, and build a water park idea, which my other locations do have a water park, but this time, bring it to the heart of St. Pete so that as a customer, you can come in, have a cocktail, watch your dog play, and grab a bite to eat and hang out with your dog in a very fun, safe environment.”

The dog-friendly section is thoughtfully designed to prioritize the safety and comfort of canine guests. Mutts & Martinis on Central offers ample space for socialization and play and designated areas for rest and refreshment. This ensures that dogs can have fun while their owners unwind.

In addition to the dog-friendly space, the bar offers a meticulously curated selection of adult beverages, including craft beers and creative dog-themed specialty cocktails such as the “Dorky Yorkie,” “The Good Boy” and the “Puffy Poodle.”

Natalie shared that the menu features an array of snacks and light bites to satisfy patrons’ and puppies’ cravings, such as their Yo-Pup Frozen Yogurt Cup.

“We’re also a big sports bar. So it’s not just the dogs, it’s the dogs and the owners. Our bar parlays into a 5000-square foot building with 28 TVs. We’re going to have the NFL ticket where you can watch any sporting event you’d ever think of,” said Natalie. “And the great thing about it is, when people’s dogs are done playing in the pool, they can come in and have a little doggy ice cream, and people can sit down and watch one of their favorite games on our TVs.”

Some of the past events listed on the bar’s website include a puppy “painting” party and a puppy fashion show and costume contest. However, Natalie shared that the bar has all kinds of events planned and that people can also hold their parties there.

“We’re thinking about adding dog trick training and putting that into gear on Wednesday nights. We’re going to start offering live bands because our place is so big,” said Natalie. “We’ll also be holding tons of birthday parties, private parties, sports parties and holiday parties.”

To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all, Mutts & Martinis on Central strictly adheres to St. Pete guidelines and regulations regarding dog bars. Proof of vaccination and well-behaved behavior are required for all dogs entering the premises. Dog bars, breweries and restaurants thrive in St. Pete and Tampa

Mutts & Martinis on Central taps into the burgeoning Tampa Bay trend of dog-friendly spaces and socialization hubs, aiming to provide a haven for dog owners and enthusiasts. Traditionally, pet owners faced the challenge of finding places to socialize without leaving their furry friends at home. Dog bars provide a solution by offering a dog-friendly atmosphere, allowing patrons to enjoy both humans and dogs. This inclusive environment fosters community and brings like-minded individuals together.

Socialization and exercise

Dog bars are ideal for socializing and exercising in a controlled environment. Dogs are pack animals, and interaction with other dogs is vital for their well-being. These establishments provide a safe space for dogs to meet and greet, encouraging positive social behaviors and reducing loneliness. With ample space for dogs to roam around, dog bars offer an opportunity to burn off energy, keeping them mentally and physically stimulated.

Unique experiences

Dog bars often spend time creating memorable experiences for their patrons. From specialized dog menus with treats and snacks to dog-themed events and activities, these establishments offer something for everyone. Some dog bars organize dog costume contests, obedience classes or even dog adoption drives, strengthening the bond between humans and their furry friends. The novelty and creativity of these experiences add an extra layer of enjoyment, making dog bars stand out from traditional bars.

Health benefits

Interacting with dogs has numerous health benefits. Spending time with dogs can reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and increase serotonin levels, promoting well-being. Dog bars allow patrons to unwind, de-stress, and enjoy the therapeutic effects of being in the company of these loyal and affectionate animals. Additionally, dogs can create a warm and welcoming atmosphere, enhancing the bar’s overall atmosphere.

Supporting animal welfare

Dog bars collaborate with St. Pete and Tampa animal shelters and rescue organizations, promoting animal welfare and adoption efforts. By hosting adoption events or partnering with shelters, these establishments actively contribute to the well-being of dogs needing loving homes. Patrons can enjoy dog bars, knowing they support a cause and potentially even find their furry companion.
