Tampa and St. Pete Activate Sandbag Locations Ahead of Storm

Beginning Sunday, August 27, the City of Tampa will activate three sandbag distribution sites as a precaution ahead of Tropical Depression 10, which is now forecast to become a hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico.

"We cannot stress enough how important it is to be prepared for a major storm," said Tampa Fire Rescue Chief Barbara Tripp in a statement. "We are urging all Tampa residents to review your evacuation zone and prepare a disaster kit for an evacuation or for a prolonged power outage. Additionally, make a plan to check on your elderly neighbors and family members to make sure they are prepared."

Sandbag Activation Schedule:

Sunday, August 27, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. (Seniors and residents with Special Needs)

Sunday, August 27, from 12:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. (General Public)

Afterward, distribution sites will be open daily from 8:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m. until further notice.

To receive sandbags, Tampa residents must show identification verifying their residence within the city limits. Suitable identification includes a driver's license, utility bill, or electric bill. The bag limit is ten.

The City of St. Petersburg

To make sandbags easily accessible, the City of St. Petersburg will open eight self-service sites on Sunday, August 27, and three full-service locations on Monday, August 28. The Pavement and Traffic Operation Building will also be open Sunday, August 27, at 7 a.m. for as long as supplies last. Ten sandbags will be distributed to each household. Staff will assist those in need of assistance to load and fill their sandbags. A driver's license or other proof of residence must be provided to receive sandbags.

Staff will help residents load their sandbags into their cars.
